Have you ever noticed a black thing in front or behind you and it follows you wherever you go? Well if you have, it’s called a shadow. Do you know what causes shadows? Light does! When light is blocked by an object a shadow forms. During the day our sun makes light and lots of shadows change direction and length throughout the day. The shadows change direction because it looks like the sun moves across the sky from east to west, but really it’s Earth’s rotation. When sun is in the east the shadow is in the west. When the sun is in the west the shadow is in the east. Shadows are longest in the morning and shortest at noon. Choose the shadow of an object to observe throughout the day. Watch how it changes! See which directions they might be in.
